PhD student studying a lizardYou can undertake a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in any area of animal biology.

Our interests are broad, from neurobiology and animal physiology to animal evolution and ecology.  Our work has applicable in conservation, human health and animal production.  We're using animals to answer questions, with a focus on high quality, publishable science.

A PhD is a program of independent, supervised research assessed solely on the basis of a thesis that is examined externally.   A doctoral thesis must be a substantial and original contribution to knowledge of the subject with which it deals.

Benefits

The School offers many benefits to postgraduate researchers, such as:

  • the annual Postgraduate Student Retreat, fully funded by the School
  • $200 in travel support to one conference in Australia or $400 in travel support to one conference overseas each year
  • $2500 a year in operational costs for three years, although students can bid for up to a total of $15,000 in research support
